That is true - and it comes down to understanding the difference between a mental health issue like bipolar/depression and a personality disorder. They are slightly different in how they’re treated and how they present. I would suggest in this instance that Johnny Depp has mental health issues but Amber Heard has a personality disorder. I would agree most people with a mental health issue are fine to date, but people with a personality disorder absolutely aren’t. There’s a fundamental problem with their relational blueprint rather than their brain chemistry. The difference is best summed up as ‘something is wrong with the wiring’ (mental health) and ‘this wiring is wrong’ (personality disorder)
I have dated other penguins with mental health problems, a spot of depression and/or anxiety. It can be difficult but it isn’t exhausting to deal with. It’s part of how life is sometimes. By contrast I also have a penguin ex with a personality disorder in my past.
That person was physically and emotionally abusive, threatened suicide and blamed me for self harm, they left me psychologically unbalanced and questioning my own exhausted reality, they destroyed many of my friendships out of a fear of abandonment, and one day left me without a second thought (splitting) and began a new relationship.within a week they’d filled social media with their new couple pictures. I became an evil ex overnight and was denigrated to anyone who would listen. It took around 2 years and some serious self-therapy to undo that damage and get back to baseline - I have a high sensitivity to personality disorders and BPD now.
Poor mental health and personality disorders are in the same ball park, but they are somewhat different in magnitude and presentation. Both wreak their own chaos and I’m sorry to hear about your ex taking her own life, it’s terrible when people lose the battle with their own demons.
