Laws have to be future proof - so let us presume that within ten years, it will become possible at the point of conception to transplant a foetus into an external uterine-sac. Grow it in a lab. When does federal protection kick in? At what point would you seek to prosecute someone for murder, or neglect, or manslaughter.... and if such laws apply outside of the uterus, why don't they apply inside the uterus. What is it about position, rather than developmental stage which makes the baby a separate legal entity?
