The reason it’s a sad state of affairs has to do with the stymying of social progress. Focus on aspects of identity continue to fracture the left into fighting itself rather than pushing for meaningful overall change. I can see why you got frustrated and I can see why you left – but once the Pandora’s box of identity politics is open, it has nowhere else to go but downward into a conflicting mess. Two aspects of you as a human are in conflict and you’ve been forced to pick a side. The fact these are arbitrary groupings is quietly overlooked as inevitable.
BAME advocates gain. LGBTQA+ advocates lose. Overall, society suffers.
