The 2006 election was very controversial and worth looking at in a lot of detail. I have thrown some at the less well considered response below: Even if we suppose that the Palestinian’s in the Gaza Strip had selected Hamas (and I am not entirely convinced) - nobody under 35 voted them in, and there has been no election since. If this were the US, the Bush administration would still be in charge and you’d be stuck with them and the Iraq war.
