The only question a liberal society should ask is… does what he’s saying have the structure of a joke. Does it subvert audience expectation or introduce an element of humour? If yes, the subject matter is irrelevant and what happened is people didn’t find him funny. He’s a comedian, his job is to make jokes, not to deliver a treatise on the modern world to the satisfaction of every niche interest groups feelings.

Saying ‘space jews’ is a joke. It is not necessarily anti-Semitic anymore than his other jokes were transphobic. Labelling jokes according to personal offence and subject matter doesn’t make them hate crimes. Playing into the competitive nature of suffering doesn’t push society into a more tolerant place - it turns society into a plethora of hate filled groups all trying to one-up each other.

The correct answer to everyone offended by Dave Chappelle is ‘so what’ - the far more offensive boogieman is identity politics - something that will be far more harmful to the Jewish population in the long run than anything any comedian can ever say.
