The problem with putting 'identity' front and centre into a film rather than narrative is that it automatically creates an in-group and an out-group. I'm sure there's a message of feminism in there, but it's feminism as experienced and framed by rich white girls - it's definitely a step up from the last time I had to have these conversations.

FRIEND: You just don't understand how empowering Wonderwoman is for human women.

PENGUIN: No because I'm a Penguin, go through it again....explain how a woman in a tiny bikini armour set, wielding a fantasy BDSM whip and ultimately being rescued by a guy is a win for feminism?

FRIEND: She punches a guy.

PENGUIN: Sure, but so did Batgirl in the 1960s.

FRIEND: It's empowering for women.

PENGUIN: You're not sure you've just had your biases monetised by a whole bunch of white guys who have sold you a packaged form of feminism, where they still get to ogle at Gal Gadot but you pay them for it?

FRIEND: She punches really hard....

Barbie felt like the Pokemon level up from that. It's feminism because Greta Gerwig did it.... same as it must be progressive if Emerald Fennell wrote it, we just won't explore what pre-existing biases and flaws these people have independently of their genitals. Gerwig has made better films, Ladybird was wonderful. Barbie was Mattel monetising white girl spending power :o)
