The problem with the word 'troll' is that it's a bit like 'terrorist' and 'freedom fighter'. It really depends which way you're looking at it and what your initial prejudices are. The comments section of this piece shows a wide variety of opinion - and indeed society has a wide variety of opinions.
For some Avi will be a troll, for others he will be a bastion of truth. For me, it's a neutral thing. The rules were announced and he made a point of demonstrating how silly the rules were for this particular point - I don't think it was very kind, but I also don't think it was a personal attack - the answer, as you've pointed out, is probably to be found in a common sense approach.
The problem with the common sense approach is that it doesn't really seem to please anyone - and that's why it's the messy answer to a complex question. This needs to be done on a sports by sports basis and worked according to the evidence available. We aren't there yet (as another commenter says) the evidence in inconclusive and so we're muddling through.
And yes, I think far more sports need to be de-gendered. Even if the sport doesn't seem to need it. For example, I'd de-gender football (soccer) which would allow anyone to compete. Males may have a strength and size advantage, but I think you'd see the emergence of different skillsets to offset this. I'd imagine within twenty years there would be woman footballer, cis or trans, in the premier league. It'd be good to see.
