The random bonuses were nice, but I don’t expect them to be a regular occurrence. Those were just an apology to the indie writers who got sidelined in the Medium-Pub era.

If Medium are smart, and they are – they will start using their bonuses more judiciously and in a graduated way. Nobody at the top end of Medium needs an extra $500, but lots of newbies might go nuts for a $50 windfall.

I expect they’ve looked at the competition and are adapting their strategies. I would expect to see more ‘prize winning’ for poetry and/or themed articles. $1000 prize to ensure everyone who is interested writes a banging article for their chance to win. Medium’s cost? A small team to read them and decide a winner rather than edit them.

Seems like a no brainer to me. It’s what I would do. And if they do this, I would also like the credit. And a billion pound bonus.
