The secret service wasn't really set up until McKinley was shot - and has done a reasonable job after that point in protecting Presidents. They expanded everything in the sixties to include lifetime protection for ex-Presidents. I presume this was done whilst they were wiping bits of Kennedy out of their hair. :o/
