The St Louis wasn’t forced back to Germany - it was denied entry to the US and turned back to Europe. Chamberlain agreed to take some Jewish folk into the U.K. but the rest went back to France, Belgium or the Netherlands. At the point they returned these countries were not German territories. Perhaps with hindsight the US senate may have reconsidered…. But we see similar arguments here in the U.K. with the demos questioning why refugees need to travel through multiple safe countries.
I’m not condemning nor condoning the individual actions of those involved, it was a complicated time in history and we’re viewing it with hindsight and what we know now - not what was known then. However, we must be careful to stick to the facts, even if they are uncomfortable.
