The truth is that Trump plays identity politics better than the Left. What the left needed to do was stick to a universal message of economic betterment, what they’ve spent the last 8 years doing is parsing out peoples identity into broad categories and then watching as the left implodes trying to sort out the definition of ‘woman’ and who wins at oppression bingo. Trump has cut through this by pointing out how insane it’s making the discourse and recognising that the universal boogeyman (straight white men) are a significant voting block - and that there are enough defectors in each identity group that he can build a coalition of lies. The only group it didn’t work with was Black Women, universally top of the oppression pyramid. Truth is, he didn’t need them.

The answer was always concentrating on how to make poor people richer and making the daily grind less harsh. In some ways the answer was Bernie Sandwrs (won by 31 points) - but, as I was told by an angry progressive back in 2020, you’re just siding with an old white man.

An old white man who understands that the main thing uniting the black white end Hispanic vote was rejection of poverty. And an old white man who would at least attempt to do something about it - unlike Trump who will just pretend.

The left is broken and it’s too slow to work out why nobody wants into a shrieking circular firing squad.
