There are huge merits in understanding and combatting prejudice of all forms against all people - I believe the best way is by being liberal, moderate and fair in your discussions. That gets increasingly difficult and leads me to be attacked by both the left and right in equal measure. The problem comes with trying to enforce tolerance - it's not something which can be mandated, it has to grow organically. The identity politics left (at it's worst) are as hateful, spiteful and misguided as the super religious right - they don't believe in God, but they believe in 'morality' which in some ways is worse - because the religious right at least have a book to twist. The left must twist against each other - if you haven't read about it, I recommend reading about the French Revolution and 1793 in particular. It's very insightful.
If you haven't seen what a moderate and an activist squaring off is like.
