There is a problematic view arriving at the edge of both the right and the left - and it involves total eradication of opposition to their position. We should ban ALL gays, or there is no place in society for ANY homophobia.

For old fashioned liberals like me, I have no problem with people being gay or being homophobic, as long as they don’t attempt to seize the apparatus of power and enact a totalitarian state or go about attempting to force their view upon others or deliberately hurt others in social spaces.

Christian doctrine is fairly clear and incompatible with homosexuality, but that’s fine… if people want to follow it, that’s also fine too. I suspect, as society becomes more cognisant of LGBTQ+ issues that it will bring them into contact and opposition to people within their own family groups and social circles.

It’s much easier to call for the death of gay people until it’s your own kid… in much the same way it’s easy to slam all homophobes but let your grandad off because he ‘doesn’t really understand and he’s from a different time’. Complexity breeds moderates.
