There's an excellent book I read a long while ago now called 'The Madness Of Adam and Eve' - which makes a compelling (albeit slightly flawed) case for schizophrenia being a bastardisation of the religious impulse. The author argues as our ancestors moved away from a nomadic and heavily fish based diet and into more wheat/agriculture the religious 'wonder' which forms part of our brains began to malfunction to the extent that some people now hear voices. There is a part of the brain, if stimulated electronically gives religious people a religious experience, and secular people a 'feeling of oneness'. It's interesting to think about how our primate ancestors moved from awe at waterfalls to awe at the universe and through philosophy into science. Good article. For my part, love a Stoic. :o)
