These are very valid points, and you've assumed I've got a lot more emotions about this than I do. This article is more of a summary of what I think than an attempt at meaningful engagement.
You'll find my attempts at engaging in discourse about identity poltiics on stories by writers like Jeremy Helligar, Jeanette Espinoza, Elle Beau and Joe Duncan among others. All respectful and interesting discussions that work towards consensus and raise valid points on either side. Other writers in the outrage genre like Jessica Valenti and Shannon Ashley do not engage in discussion - they're locked to broadcast and their posts are frequently contradictory and counter productive to their stated aims (in my opinion)
I think there's room for both. I'll happily debate this hybrid of Marxism and Post-Structuralism that's hijacked society - but I also reserve the right to throw out sassy posts baiting people into the discussion too. That's the argumentative part of my penguinism.
And yes, there are deeper issues at play here - I'm a left leaning penguin undereath the feathers. A left leaning libertarian (if you can stomach such a contradiction) - but the answers provided by identity poltiics to inequality aren't fit for purpose. The cure is no longer harmless and ineffectual, it's causing more harm than good across great swathes of society and though I don't write articles often on Medium (anymore), when I do - it's usually to challenge the status quo.
Thanks for carrying on the conversation and I'll concede that I do work in an industry disproprortionately affected by identity politics (the arts) - perhaps that has played into my unbecoming and unpenguinlike outrage - I'll think on it. :o)
