They are not equal in the current level of threat they pose to the US society - but they are equal in terms of the overall threat they pose to society (generally). The US has always had a nationalistic bent and has always skewed further to the right than most countries - but if you include the sort of overhauls that Mao brought in after 1949 you'll see the wider danger.

The language police do not have enough political capital to throw me into a gulag - but let us remember that societies change and leaders of societies alter. Your gerontocracy may give way to a younger crowd and that might be equally problematic in the opposite direction. :o)
