This is a great article. And despite what you may think, Jonna isn't a bigot. A bigot is someone who refuses to listen or engage with someone who has opposing views.
Jonna just dissents. And that's fine. And she dissents for her own private reasons. That's fine too. The language is indicative of respectful disagreement. "I do not support LGBTQ" is hardly hate speech and shouldn't be treated as such.
When people treat dissent as oppression, they fuel the divide. Your instincts are right. And actually - "I do not support LGBTQ" is a starting point you can work from. She can be changed... not by activism, but by gentle inclusivity, a chirstmas card, polite conversations at family gatherings, a sensitive understanding of her position - even if you think it's misguided.
Slowly that moves from "I do not support LGBTQ, except for Phoenix" - and then you've got wiggle room and hope. Great article.
