This is a tragic case and probably utterly avoidable with the right sort of social work support in place. II disagre with Husna that she looks sad becuase she got caught - I think she looks sad because she is sad.

Parents with poor impulse control sometimes lash out and in this instance it was very likely a result of being put under extemely trying conditions. Both parents will have to live with the guilt of what they've done for a long time, as will their other child and the grandparents.

There's no real winner here, a mother who was struggling, a child who was starved of attention, a father who made a misguided attempt to keep his family together and a community that will be devastated that it happened on their watch. A collective failing of society to protect its most vulnerable members.

What's needed is good investment in decent social care programmes, nursery places, trained social workers who can act on abuse concerns earlier and put in assistance before explosive and tragic incidents like this happen.
