This is perhaps in America. Here in the U.K. if you’re a teacher, that’s the thing people will fixate upon - being a Black teacher here doesn’t inform pedagogical practice as much as it seemingly does over in the US. Perhaps it did when I was a child, but not anymore.
Idris Elba is a superb actor - and like Denzel before him doesn’t want to involve himself in identity politics. He wants people to recognise him for his talents - and rightly so in my opinion. People get mightily offended when folks deviate from the mantras of identity politics and I’m not sure why that should be the case. A rejection of hierarchical models of the world based on skin colour seems sensible to me - skin tone based hierarchy seems to be a fascination of racists and anti-racists with religious fervour.
And alas, I don’t think he’ll play Bond. James Bond is a two dimensional boring Mary-Sue for Etonian white guys. In a world where everyone must be cast according to their race they have been given a legitimate reason to veto him. Shame really, he’d be a Bond worth watching.
