Thus is the problem with identity politics my friend. It subdivides perpetrators and victims alike into their immutable characteristics and then battles for narrative supremacy. Everyone involved is used as a tool to justify why every other group is to blame. This will be every news story now, the very human tragedy lost in a maelstrom of speculation and ideological propaganda. Society cannot move forward because there is nowhere to go, silence is seen as complicity, the nuances lost quickly and any lessons to be learned quickly forgotten because its everyone else’s fault.
Sometimes humans are awful to each other. The reasons for that are complex and multifaceted and cannot be explained by the inherent evil attributed by one set of immutable or mutable characteristics. Tragedies like this should shame us all, but they don’t – because we’re too busy trying to shame others.
