Tony is right, I don't have children - but I have been a drama teacher and so I'm perhaps a little jaded by the propensity for escapism via costume. It feels very much like something people should grow out of - but I accept your point. Another commenter has suggested the article is hypocritical given I'm a playwright and I have to concede they're right.
I think my real frustration is the fact there are so many good stories in the real world that are inspiring and aren't fiction. Those aren't as accessible or even perhaps as joyful as being a dragon or dressing as Spidergirl - and I think society is moving towards an 'entertainment' and distraction direction - more bread and circuses than questioning and reflection. All style not much substance. I think it's a poor message to give children.
I rarely punch in any direction but sideways I think. That's because post structuralism is allowing us to redefine up and down in a continuing who's who of self-imposed victim statuses. I just jab out and catch whichever group happens to be passing. :o)
