Unfortunately we've entered a new age of Medium and I'm going to have to update this article about the different Medium eras.

Because what has emerged, after we did upbeat productivity, followed by Trump bashing lefty-love-ins, followed by racism is awful, and the ongoing men are awful.... is 'doom is awful.'
We know doom is awful. That's why we call it doom. You don't motivate people to change by convincing them all is lost and abandon all hope here - but Medium has an outrage in echo chamber problem. It's happening on a whole host of subjects - the algorithm feeds enough sycophants of a particular writer to push that writer over a wider distribution threshold... and then the echo chamber grows in mass and volume to consume the moderates.
A few writers over the last year or so have built serious audiences off the back of this. Those of us who take a more moderate approach won't build 20K followers in a few weeks by pointing out the obvious, or the obviously untrue - but it's been a winning strategy for a while. Medium needs to find a way to differentiate between good writing with depth from good-writing that's surface level clickbait. So far, no such luck.
I share your frustration - but I'm hopeful for change :o)
