We Brits are a complex and nuanced bunch - the Brexit vote was one of our biggest acts of collective stupidity, but it pays to understand where those votes came from.

As a general rule those votes were ideologically driven by the political right who have never left go of the empire, the working class - who, whether we like to admit it or not, have been disproportionately affected by EU immigration into a number of sectors and not had the benefits adequately explained. And finally the middle class who have been fed on a diet of ‘all the laws you don’t like, all the frustrations you have are Europe’s fault’ in the media since about 1985. It’s telling that where the remain votes were strong were in areas where multiculturalism works.

Britain is an island nation with an island nation mentality. It doesn’t want to be part of the hegemony of Europe, has long resisted it, and remains culturally closer to the US. We are an outlier, but the vote to go our own way is one that Britain will regret in the fullness of time.
