We do have a complicated history of thee, thou, you and ye to deal with. 'You' replaced thou, thee and ye. If you can get these into your brain, Shakespeare becomes a lot more interesting.... cos he fucks about with the status levels of who is speaking to whom. Most of that jackassery ceased to be funny in about 1730, but pretentious bellends at the RSC will still titter uncontrollably as though they're watching a stand up comedy routine.

It's a particular type of laugh. I hate it. It's far too knowing.
