Well.... I'm technically a Penguin (see my pinned story) because it allows me to effectively monitor who has inbuilt bias - usually because they go on the attack at the person they believe I am - rather than the person that I am.
If it helps you in your quest for my identity, I was a extra-curricular teacher/social worker for 15 years and now work in the NHS. I moved because child protection got too much for the Penguin brain. I'll let you decide whether I'm a white man who wouldn't put up with the shit pay, or whether it's better that I swap genders and become a woman in your mind.
And yes, I agree.... I think its batty that we underpay teachers relative to credit card financial technicians.... HOWEVER, that is an argument about socialism, that isn't a gendered argument.... because there are no barriers other than privately held beliefs which make people choose money over job satisfaction or vice versa. If there are no barriers, then the gender imbalance is a product of choice - and the ability to choose is what feminism is about. If women don't like the shit pay they can vote with their feet and go to Financial Tech.
Exactly like my friend Gina. She's on £120,000 a year because she absolutely will change jobs and ask for a pay rise. Perhaps this this 'male' behaviour - but she's still exercising a choice and she's still doing so with a vagina. Perhaps she'd love to be a teacher (I doubt it) - but she won't do the job because money matters more to her than it does to me. That might be because we're both women with different priorities, it might be because she's a woman and I'm a man and we're bucking the trend - or it could be that we're both exercising our choice with very little stopping us from doing so.
This story was framed to make the author's life choices look like society's problems. Frankly, I thought she made the right choice and money is overrated.
