What Markl says is true. England and Scotland did have different monarchs for a long time - right up until Elizabeth I failed in her civic duty to have crotchfruit. This meant her cousin's child (James) became both James I of England but he was already James VI of Scotland. His Great-granddaughter Anne was on the throne when they made the whole thing permanent and chucked Wales and Ireland into the mix too. Twenty seconds later we got German monarchs, a bit like German measles but they still haven't cleared up. ;o)
