Where have all the contrarians gone?
A plea to Medium to mix up the homepage and stop subjecting us to the same relentless left-of-centre lazy journalism.
Medium. I always bee line for the centre ground. It’s not a comfortable place to be in most cases. I’m forever playing devil’s advocate in my social group and I like that self appointed role. If I had the time and inclination I would have make myself a badge. I would’ve got a qualification in obstinacy and a degree in the sarcastic backhand.
Discussion is what Medium should be for. I’m not the only one who thinks so. I like it when writers take time to deconstruct each other’s positions. I enjoy reading the comments. I’m not the only one. It’s the only way we guarantee that everyone learns something new.
The internet has allowed people to retreat into philosophical bunkers. From the safety of their unchallenged world view they can preach to the converted with ease. On occasion they lob a verbal grenade into the opposing view and run off. This neat trick allows them to remain unchallenged and unaccountable. I’m seeing it a lot. I’m all about the cut and thrust of hand-to-hand, verb-to-verb combat.
Medium is a place of discussion. It should be challenging to be here.
