When you’re attempting to put your loveable bears in order, Winnie will almost certainly be near the top. I‘d say it’s a toss-up between Winnie, and Paddington with Rupert, Ruxspin, Yogi and Baloo making up the rest of the pack. Of the top two, your preference largely depends on whether or not you like your bears with a neurodivergent bunch of friends or not.

I’ll take Winnie the Pooh over Rupert any day.

Now that Disney own Marvel, we can safely refer to Winnie the Pooh as a Marvel superhero — and like all Marvel Superheroes, he has an excellent origin story. One worthy of your time and I’m going to tell it.

It begins where all good stories begin. In Canada.

Winnie is short for Winnipeg

It began with a soldier who bought a bear cub to keep as a pet. His name was Harry Colebourn and he was a vet. Winnipeg soon became the regimental mascot of the Canadian Army Veterinary Corp and when the regiment was brought over to England in 1914 for World War I, Winnipeg came with them.

Winnipeg wasn’t destined for the front line along with the horses, pigeons and other animals who were pressed into service…
