Wow. This article is a blast from the past. I'd completely forgotten it existed. Some parents will indeed choose to bring children into the world, but the test for Downs is now significantly earlier in the pregnancy than it used to be - this will (and is already) having an effect on the incidence of Downs in the population. There's an excellent documentary somewhere with Sally Phillips (A British comedienne) who takes the debate to the medical profession in Scandanavia - it's well worth a watch.

This piece pre-dates my transformation into the Penguin... I was writing here for a good year and a half under my own name before I decided to transition into a flightless, ageless, sexless, genderless bird... but I thought I'd got rid of everything. Lucky for me you're probably about the third person to read this - and in a few days it will vanish again into the ether and become a deleted story.
