Yes, unfortunately it was one of those terms that was grabbed by enthusiastic white people who were determined to tell everyone how 'woke' they were - and then rapidly became a parody of itself. It has moved so far away from its original intention that the term is for all intents and purposes meaningless. It's a shame, but words will do that I guess.

I will give DS9 a go and get back to you. The few episodes I've caught have been quite good, but I've never really known who the characters are - I need to give it a good re-watch. I do love the necessary writing induced race-blindness about Star Trek, loved it with LaForge, and with the sad passing of Nichelle Nicholls more attention is being paid to just how important Lt Uhura was to the cultural changes unfolding at the time.
