Yes, unfortunately the nature of Medium means the titles have to bring people here. 'My 12 minute thoughts about the complex interplay between trans-rights and non-binary politicisation' wouldn't have worked as a title - but thanks for coming back and reading.

By all means agree and disagree and come back and say more. That's the main purpose of articles like these, where the most interesting bits are frequently to be found in the comments section and plenty of people go and get a sense of where the demos is from reading others. There are comments already from across the spectrum and I'm proud of being able to hold a (relatively small) group of readers together from all political positions, rather than building a huge audience from one political position. Everyone is welcome, not everyone has to like or agree with everything.

I don't think everyone who identifies as non-binary is on the same page - I think some may be genuinely Trans, some may be autistic (as you suggest) and some may simply be experimenting with the levers of control over what they perceive to be an overtly oppressive society - they can do this because of an inherent rebellious streak, but they may also do this for other complicated reasons relating to attention and early years childhood experiences. This does create a problem for society though - how can we sort this out?

The autism connection is interesting - and I have what we refer to as the 'tism gene' running through my family and through the Significant Other Penguin's family too. This hasn't thrown up any non-binary individuals as of yet, but there is certainly correlation, though with all the caveats that correlation isn't causation. I suppose, as a punt at an idea, I could suggest those people who already don't fully understand the complex rules of society and in particular the maelstrom of conflicting advice about how to be a man or a woman may head for the relative safety of neither/both. This again adds complexity.

Most thoughts aren't coherent - but it certainly helps my creative brain to come back and edit thoughts after the fact - this piece has been edited for almost a fortnight. I also have clearly labelled spreadsheets of what I'm supposed to do and by when. The chaos of my brain would not function without these. :o)
