You aren’t paying for a meal, you’re paying for his time and social company. It’s usually the other way round, but it’s a good message to give someone - you offered, you followed through, you’re a woman of your word. I suspect men don’t enjoy footing the bill for every girl who expects it as recompense for their time, and those feelings and anxieties you’ve highlighted likely exist for men too. They aren’t all rich and able to throw money around for burgers - in an equal society both pay the same, in an egalitarian society, whoever is richer pays more and everyone contributes relative to their wealth.
