You caught me being cranky. I was having a bout of insomnia and let fly at Ms Jgln for writing the same article I've read about a billion times now. High on the clapping low on the engagement. She's a good writer and I want her to tackle the nitty-gritty and stop playing to the crowd.

The suicide question is a bit more complicated and this meta-analysis does a relatively good job of explaining it. https://bmcpsychiatry.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12888-017-1398-8

It differentiates between SSA (serious suicide attempts) and other forms of suicide attempt such as parisuicidal pause (just wanting everything to stop for a while). It suggests men are more likely to die because they are more committed to dying. This can be in part attributed to men killing themselves over external stimuli such as relationship breakdown, retirement or some other factor, whilst women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with a depressive episode. I don't know why that would be the case - but I think it's worthy of more investigation and is usually overlooked when people make the 'equality' argument and start arguing for 'numbers of people who should...' etc.

And yes, I'm not trying to dictate Ukranian policy - but there was a surprising lack of uproar from feminists about this. I've been working with my local neighbourhood to welcome about 8 or 9 young Ukranian women into our London community. All in their twenties, none of them have children. Now, I'm not going to argue they turn around and go back but I'm interested why there is this discrepancy. The law could easily have said 'mothers and children' or 'anyone caring for a child' should leave - but they didn't. It was a blanket ban on one half of the population.

And yes, 'the women and children policy' has been around for a very long time... that doesn't make it a valid, humane or feminist position. I'd like to have seen some ardent feminists coming out and registering their thoughts when it wasn't about getting women into the board room and being CEOs - that was the challenge I threw out to Katie Jgln, not because i want to overturn the Ukrainian soverignty but because I think she's allowing herself to make the easy arguments for claps and clicks.

I'll probs write an article about it - and I'll probably use this comment to write the opposing position. I should probably put you on a commission. :o)
