You keep going at your own pace and building an audience - what a lot of people forget to factor in is the growth potential and how much you improve as a writer. If you can get a bit of traction in a piece then Medium will ensure it earns a few pence here and there over the next few years. Over time and with more pieces doing the rounds that sort of thing adds up.

Also, don't be afraid of dashing out the old short piece here and there. Challenge yourself to get one written, edited and out in under an hour. It can be done. Most of those sink without a trace fairly quickly, but sometimes they don't and it can be a pleasant surprise.

I've found that blending the longer more carefully written pieces with the seat-of-the-pants shorter pieces is a great way to keep creativity alive and stop the rot from setting in. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a long piece, sometimes I'm in the mood to be whimsical. :o)
