You're absolutely right, if something is a 'necessity' then then there should be a basic level of this thing provided by the Government. Necessities include, shelter, warmth, food and water. The capitalist options should be provided on top of that - many people would happily subsist on the basics if they were so inclined - but nobody should be dying of starvation in the UK (as happened during austerity) and pensioners and parents should not be choosing between heating and eating. It's bullshit and it needs to stop and the sooner we can get Truss or Sunak out of a job, the sooner we can get on with implementing something akin to a genuine and progressive socialist system.
